What Is a Full House in Yahtzee? (25 Points — Explained)

A full house in Yahtzee is three of one number and two of another, always worth 25 points. See examples, scoring rules, the Joker exception and common mistakes.

A full house in Yahtzee is three dice of one number plus two dice of another number — for example 3-3-3-5-5. It always scores exactly 25 points, regardless of which numbers make it up.

That is the whole rule. Three-plus-two equals a full house, and the face values never change the score. Below are the examples, the scoring rules, the one official exception most guides miss, and the mistakes that cost players points.

This guide explains the full house in Yahtzee-style dice scoring. FateRound calls its Yahtzee-style game Five Dice — same 25-point full house, same 13 categories, tracked for you automatically.

How a full house scores

The full house sits in the lower section of the scorecard and is worth a flat 25 points.

This is different from Three of a Kind and Four of a Kind, which score the sum of all five dice. A full house of 1-1-1-2-2 and a full house of 6-6-6-5-5 both score the same 25.

A few rules that matter:

  • Each category is used once per game. Once your full house box is filled, that is it.
  • You can score a zero there. If the game is ending and you never rolled one, you can write 0 in the box.
  • You do not have to score it immediately. Three 6s and two 5s makes a valid full house for 25 — but those same dice put 18 into your Sixes row, which may matter more if you are chasing the upper section bonus.

The Joker rule exception

Here is the part most guides skip. Under official Joker rules, a second Yahtzee can sometimes be scored as a full house.

If you roll five of a kind and both of these are true:

  1. Your Yahtzee box is already filled (with 50, or with a 0), and
  2. The matching upper-section box for that number is already used

...then you may place the roll in any lower-section category — including full house, where it scores the standard 25 points.

Outside of that specific situation, five of a kind is a Yahtzee, not a full house. Many casual and house-rule games skip Jokers entirely, so agree on it before you start. Five Dice on FateRound follows the same Joker rule so your five-of-a-kind rolls behave the way you expect.

Common mistakes

Treating every Yahtzee as a full house. Five matching dice are their own 50-point category. Only the Joker situation above lets it fill the full house box.

Applying poker logic. In poker, aces-full beats twos-full. In Yahtzee-style scoring the dice values are irrelevant — every full house is 25.

Burning the category too early. Scoring your first full house on autopilot can cost you the 35-point upper bonus if your Ones through Sixes are lagging behind the 63-point threshold.

Strategy: how to actually roll one

Full houses appear more often than players expect. If you roll two pairs — say 3-3-5-5-1 — you are one die from a full house. Hold both pairs, re-roll the odd die, and you have a 1 in 3 chance of completing it, since either pair value works.

That said, 25 points is a middling score. If you still have rolls left and a shot at a large straight (40) or a Yahtzee (50), chase the bigger prize instead.

Frequently asked questions

What does full house mean in Yahtzee? Three dice showing one number and two dice showing another — 25 points, always. Same in Five Dice, our Yahtzee-style game.

Is a full house 25 points in Yahtzee? Yes. It is a fixed 25, unlike Three of a Kind and Four of a Kind which total all five dice.

Does a Yahtzee count as a full house? Only under Joker rules, and only when the Yahtzee box and the matching upper box are both already filled. Otherwise it scores as a Yahtzee.

What is a small straight in Yahtzee? Four consecutive numbers, such as 2-3-4-5. It scores 30. A large straight is five in a row and scores 40.

Is a full house in "Yatzy" the same thing? In the Scandinavian Yatzy variant a full house also means three-plus-two, but it scores the sum of the five dice rather than a flat 25. In standard Yahtzee-style scoring it is always 25.

How many dice do you need? Five. See how many dice are in Yahtzee for the full breakdown.

Put it into practice

You do not need a physical scorecard to test any of this. Five Dice on FateRound — our Yahtzee-style dice scoring game — tracks every category, the upper bonus, and the full house automatically, so you can focus on the dice.
