If you have ever stared at your Yahtzee scorecard wondering whether your dice actually count as a full house, you are not alone. It is one of the most misunderstood categories in the game. Here is a clear breakdown of what qualifies, what it scores, and the mistakes people make.
The Short Answer
A full house in Yahtzee is when you roll three of one number and two of another. It is always worth 25 points, no matter which numbers are involved.
That is the entire rule. Three-plus-two equals full house. The face values on the dice do not affect the score --- it is a flat 25 every time.

Notice that a Yahtzee (five of a kind) does not count as a full house under standard rules. Even though you technically have "three of one number and two of the same number," the official scoring treats it as its own category, not a full house. This trips up a lot of new players.
How to Score It on Your Scorecard
The full house sits in the lower section of the Yahtzee scorecard. When you roll a qualifying combination and choose to score it there, you write 25. If you do not have a full house but need to fill the category, you can still place a zero there on a future turn --- but obviously you would rather not.
A few things worth knowing:
- You cannot score a full house more than once. Each category on the scorecard can only be used one time per game.
- You are not forced to score it immediately. If you roll a full house early, you might decide a different category is a better use of those dice. For example, three 6s and two 5s could also go into your Sixes row for 18 points in the upper section.
- The 25 points are fixed. Unlike Three of a Kind or Four of a Kind (which add up all five dice), a full house is always 25 whether you rolled 1-1-1-2-2 or 6-6-6-5-5.
Common Full House Mistakes
Thinking a Yahtzee counts as a full house. As mentioned above, five of the same number is not a valid full house. It is its own category worth 50 points.
Confusing it with poker. In poker, a full house ranks higher or lower depending on the card values. In Yahtzee, a full house is a full house --- always 25 points. The numbers on the dice are irrelevant to the score.
Burning the category too early. Some players score a full house on the first one they roll. But if your upper section numbers are lagging behind the 63-point bonus threshold, those three matching dice might be more valuable there.
Strategy Tip
Full houses come up more often than you might expect. If you roll two pairs (say 3-3-5-5-1), you are one die away from a full house on your next roll. Hold both pairs and re-roll the odd die --- you have a 1 in 3 chance of completing it, since you need the die to match either pair.
That said, 25 points is a moderate score. Do not chase a full house at the expense of a potential large straight (40 points) or Yahtzee (50 points) if you have rolls left and a better opportunity.
