Classic card game·2–6 players

Go Fish

The classic ask-for-a-rank card game. Collect four of a kind to score a book. Most books wins.

Go Fish on FateRound plays by the standard rules — ask an opponent for a rank you already hold, take all of theirs if they have any, "Go Fish" from the ocean if they don't. Complete four of a rank for a book and keep asking until all 13 books are made. 2–6 players; 3 or more is the sweet spot for making the asking part interesting. Hosts can set an optional per-turn timer (or leave it off) and a whole-game clock; when the game clock runs out, most books wins, tiebreak by fewest cards left in hand.

Game rules & how to play

Objective

  • Collect the most "books" — a book is all four cards of the same rank (e.g. all four Queens).
  • Play continues until every one of the 13 books has been made, or the ocean runs out and nobody can ask.

Setup

  • 2 to 6 players. 2 players are dealt 7 cards each; 3 or more players are dealt 5 cards each.
  • The rest of the standard 52-card deck becomes the ocean (draw pile) in the middle.
  • Spectators can watch but cannot see any player's hand — only counts and completed books.

How a turn works

  • On your turn, ask one opponent for a specific rank you already hold at least one of ("Do you have any 7s?").
  • If they have any, they must hand over ALL of them — then you go again and ask anyone for another rank.
  • If they have none, they say "Go Fish" and you draw the top card from the ocean. If the drawn card is the rank you asked for, you go again; otherwise play passes to the next player.

Books, refill, and end of game

  • Whenever you complete a set of 4 of a rank, it becomes a scored book displayed in front of you.
  • If your hand empties while the ocean still has cards, you draw a fresh hand (up to 5) and keep playing.
  • Once all 13 books are made — or the ocean is empty and everyone is out of cards — the game ends. Most books wins; ties are broken by fewest remaining cards.

Frequently asked questions

How many players do you need for Go Fish?
Go Fish works with 2–6 players. Create a game on FateRound, share the link or code, and everyone joins from their browser — no sign-up required.
Is Go Fish free to play online?
Yes. Go Fish on FateRound is completely free — no download, no payment, and no account needed. Create a game and start playing in under a minute.
Can I play Go Fish on my phone?
Yes. FateRound runs in any mobile browser. Share the room link in your group chat and everyone can play Go Fish from their phone or desktop.
How do trophies work in Go Fish?
Trophies are earned automatically as you play — things like finishing your first game, racking up wins, or hitting a milestone. Bronze, silver, gold, and platinum trophies are listed above with what they need; some are secret and only reveal themselves once you've earned them. Trophies and points carry over to your FateRound profile across every game.
How many cards do you deal in Go Fish?
With 2 players, deal 7 cards each. With 3 or more players, deal 5 cards each. The rest of the deck becomes the ocean (draw pile) in the middle.
Can I ask for a rank I do not hold?
No. Standard Go Fish rules require you to hold at least one card of the rank you ask for. FateRound enforces this on the server, so the "Ask" menu only offers ranks you actually have in hand.
What happens when I run out of cards mid-game?
If the ocean still has cards, you automatically draw a fresh hand (up to 5) and stay in the game. If both your hand and the ocean are empty, you are out for the rest of this round.
When does Go Fish end?
The game ends when all 13 books have been made, or when the ocean is empty and no player has any cards left. Whoever has the most books wins; ties are broken by fewest remaining cards.
